The central goal of Fair Trade is for farmers to enjoy a well-deserved higher standard of living, thus encouraging thriving communities and sustainable farming practices.
Fair trade guidelines cover many facets of socio-agricultural issues including fair prices for farmers and workers – with guaranteed minimums, and premiums for certified organic products; fair labor conditions – living wages, safe working conditions, freedoms of association, and the prohibition of child labor. Fair Trade is also about environmental sustainability and employing safe methods of farming that are good for the environment, vulnerable eco-systems, and the workers’ health. Fair Trade calls for restrictions of pesticides, and prohibition of GMOs; and it calls for democratic decision-making for the investment of earned premiums and investment in community programs from business development workshops, social empowerment training, to organic certification.
Fairtrade International sets the international standards for Fair Trade, and FLO-CERT gives out certifications after independent auditors determine whether the standards are being met.
